Winter Weekend in Avila Beach
The first snow fell yesterday at my home in Colorado. To say I am not ready for winter would be… an understatement. I love the sun and warmth and everything that is not winter, to be honest.
For that reason, I try to get away as much as possible during the winter months to warmer locales and usually take a few trips to the west coast. I don’t know when I’ll be able to get back safely — so I’m reminiscing about the trips I took in the past. One of my all time favorite long winter weekend trips was to Avila Beach California. You might be wondering where that is, and I almost don’t want to let you in on the secret. It’s the type of sleepy coastal town you didn’t think still existed. I spent a weekend there in January and can’t wait to get back.
If you are nearby or planning a trip to the coast, hopefully this will inspire you to make a stop in this central coast wonderland.
I flew into San Luis Obispo which is only about 10 miles from the coast. After I picked up my car I drove straight to Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards. It’s a beautiful and scenic family run vineyard and tasting room in the canyon. I immediately fell in love with the atmosphere. There are peacocks roaming around, all types of outdoor seating, a creek, and, of course, wine!
I had a super relaxing time sitting near the creek writing and tasting some of their wines. It was the perfect way to start a long weekend. Everyone who worked there was super friendly, and the surroundings couldn’t be beat.
After leaving the vineyard I decided to find a place to watch the sunset. I saw a few people turning on the same road so I decided to follow them. I had no idea where I was going, but my bet paid off. I ended up at this beautiful overlook and trails above what I later found was Cave Landing Beach. There were other people out watching sunset, but a few steps in any direction and I was alone again. I took some photos and watched one of the most beautiful sunsets. Looking out at this vista I truly had to pinch myself. I was so happy and grateful to be here. So in awe of what I had already experienced in just a few hours.
After sunset I made the short drive into town to my hotel, Avila La Fonda. I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. It’s beautiful and just steps from the beach, for one. When I arrived I was given a gift and the full run down of the amenities. They have nightly wine and cheese, late night pie and ice cream, beautiful suites with fireplaces and soaking tubs, balconies and a whole lot more. The vibe was more bed and breakfast than hotel. I knew when I got there that I would have a hard time leaving for any activities. Luckily it’s so centrally located that I never had to travel far.
After a great nights sleep (and wine and cheese and pie and ice cream) I woke up early to take my coffee and freshly baked chocolate croissant for a walk down to the beach to watch the sunrise. It was chilly, but still only enough for a sweater and a scarf in January. This is the kind of winter I like. I was greeted with a mostly empty beach and the most beautiful colors to start my day. I spent some time on the swings and exploring under the pier. I want to start every day like this.
After sunrise I walked the short path back to my hotel for more coffee, more croissants, and a quick change before the short drive to Avila Beach Paddlesports. The weather took a turn, but they made me feel very confident paddling out to the lighthouse. This was such a fun experience. I was alone on the water and it was so peaceful. I saw a lot of wildlife and got a great workout. I didn’t stay at the lighthouse for too long since it started to get a little stormy. I can’t wait to go back and do it again!
After another stop at the hotel and some relaxation I headed to Sycamore Mineral Springs for a soak in one of their private hillside hot tubs. I think they are closed currently, but definitely recommend booking a tub when they open back up. It felt truly secluded in the forest. It was the perfect way to relax after my paddle. The prices are reasonable for the beautiful surroundings and the people working were so great. You can also stay overnight, book spa treatments, and eat in the restaurant. I’ve been to many hot springs, and this was truly one of the most memorable.
On my way back to town I decided to make a quick stop at the Avila Valley Barn — a cute and quaint farmstand/barn/petting zoo. I was so sad I couldn’t bring back all of the food on the plane with me. It was very cute and would be a great stop for a family or a date.
After a big day of activity I just wanted to relax. I spent some time in my room and on the balcony drinking wine, before heading to the beach for dinner and to watch the sunset. It was magical. I also stopped by a couple of wine tastings. Avila has an entire wine trail and is truly a destination for wine tasting. I recommend Alapay Cellars — super friendly people, great wine, and just a stones throw from my hotel :)
The next morning I went out to watch the sunrise before heading back for my flight. I had such a magical weekend. I love that I could do so much in so little time — everything is centrally located. This is the perfect winter getaway.
